Mini Splits Are Great—Until You Ignore Them

How to Maintain a Mini Split (Without Making a Big Deal About It)

If you’ve got a mini split, here’s the thing—like anything else that runs constantly and moves air around your house, it’s gonna get dirty. And if you ignore it long enough, performance drops off, efficiency tanks, and something eventually breaks. So let’s get ahead of that with a few easy maintenance steps. Nothing complicated, no technician needed (most of the time), just practical stuff you can actually do.

1. Clean the Indoor Filters

This is the big one. Flip open the front panel on your wall unit and you’ll find a couple mesh filters. If it’s been a few months—or worse, a few years—they’re probably caked in dust. Pull them out, rinse with warm water, let them dry completely, and slap them back in. Aim to do this every 1–3 months depending on how dusty your house is or if you have pets.

2. Wipe Down the Indoor Unit

Use a damp cloth to gently wipe off the unit itself. No need for chemicals. You’re just getting rid of dust buildup so it’s not blowing that stuff around your living room.

3. Check the Outdoor Unit

Head outside and take a look at the condenser. If it’s buried under leaves, weeds, or those fuzzball things trees drop in the spring, clear all that away. Give it at least a foot of breathing room on all sides. A quick spray with a hose (nothing high-pressure) will help knock off dirt and keep airflow smooth.

4. Look for Signs of Trouble

If your system suddenly sounds louder, smells funny, or stops keeping the house as cool as it used to, those are signs something might be wrong. That’s when it’s time to call someone before it snowballs into a bigger problem.

5. Keep the Remote Batteries Fresh

Yes, this one’s dumb-simple. But you’d be surprised how many people think their unit is broken when really, the remote just isn’t sending the signal.

One Last Thought

Mini splits are pretty low-maintenance—if you give them a little attention now and then. A clean system runs quieter, lasts longer, and keeps your energy bill from creeping up. And frankly, none of this takes more than an hour twice a year.
